WSOBP V - The Recap Page 3

Day 3 Format:
Even for the reasonably educated, the final day format was not necessarily easy to follow. As a player, it was pretty much necessary to simply stick around and play until your team was knocked out. As a spectator, you needed to get a drink, spectate, and not try to figure out the bracket. The 128 teams were seeded into 8 separate brackets of 16 teams... sort of. The format was double elimination, with best 2/3 series in the winner's bracket, single games in

the loser's bracket, and the final match consisting of a combo of 1 game then a best 2/3 series if needed. The catch: each 16 team bracket was not isolated. Losers from each round rotated as they dropped down, preventing teams from having to face the same team twice.

Bracket #1:
SCBP had roughly 20 teams make the final day7. Of the 8 groupings of 16 teams, SCBP somehow had five teams in the same grouping with the #1 seed (Since Sliced Bread). Big Trouble in Little Tokyo had to play (and beat) their rideshare partners (Team Beirut) in round #1. In round #2, We Started This Gangsta Shit faced off against fellow socal residents Sack Lunch (who might want to consider coming to a tournament or two next year). In round #3, CC Boys beat Who Misses?. We Started This Gangsta Shit setup an all SCBP final when they got revenge8 for their one prelim loss against honorary SCBP team9 Kick Rocks Platinum. Peter & Sean also met in the final of the $5k West Coast Classic, and this match turned out the same, with We Started This Gangsta Shit winning the bracket. With 8 brackets of teams playing for the 50k, it was tough to have the final 4 (and 2 others) in our bracket be teams that might be in the final four at any given Canes tournament.

Other Day 3 Action:
Another curse of a bad draw were MexiCali and Doubt It, who made the final four in their bracket, but had to play each other. MexiCali won that round, but then lost to Ask About Us, a dynamic pairing from the East Coast. West Fuckin Coast won three straight matches to make the winner's bracket final of their group, but they fell to Game Over Boy'z. Gossip Girl joined We Started This Gangsta Shit as two of the 8 teams advancing through the winner's brackets.

The Elite Eight:
The final 16 teams in the tournament paired up to play for 8 important spots10. Three SCBP teams were still around, but each match was difficult. We Started This Gangsta Shit played norcal nemesis Doin Hella Much. The series stretched to 4 total games, but once again, Hersh had Peter's number11. West Fuckin' Coast got lined up across from Ask About Us. Deep & Kessler pushed common etiquette boundaries, a bunch of rules, and all of Sonoma Joe's buttons in their 4 game victory. Gossip Girl played

MDBP's dreamteam Projectile Dysfunction. P.D. forced a best 2/3 series, but Gossip Girl averted a major disaster, ending P.D.'s run12, and ensuring SCBP would at least have one team to root for in the final 8.

7 On the SCBP Teams page, teams that made day three are denoted by a west-coast inspired 3 (4 fingers up... two twisted in the middle with the thumb tucked!). [Return]
8 A special nod of recognition to Kick Rocks' Peezi, from whom I stole 'the train' distraction for the final redemption shot. [Return]
9 Kick Rocks is a Vegas crew, so calling them SCBP is stretching the truth. Their accomplishments aren't acknowledged on the flag. But, they roll deep to SCBP tournaments so they're family. [Return]
10 Once teams made the final 8, records were reset, making previous losses irrelevant. [Return]
11 Prior to WSOBP V, Peter & Hersh played in four tournaments this year. Hersh won all four. Peter placed 2nd twice, and third twice. Hersh's head-to-head record: 5-0. Domination. [Return]
12 On Day 2, with Pongshot King Sean Foster shooting lights out, MDBeerPong Czar Austin revealed, "I told Jayni that if I win the World Series, I'd play with her. So, I guess I'll be playing with her next year." [Return]
