WSOBP II Preparation

Browsing the internet back in 2005, Peter and Tyler first heard of the World Series of Beer Pong. To say they were intrigued by the idea of winning $10,000 by playing Beirut is an understatement. But intrigued never materialized into action. Partly due to bad timing (the tournament was scheduled for the week immediately after New Years), but mostly because it had to be a waste of money. There had to be teams that just don't miss, so what chance would they have? After reading the tournament aftermath and seeing video from the championship match (part I and part II), the group learned that the skill level was not out of reach. Peter and Tyler realized that, with a little bit of practice, they could compete against the teams they saw on video. By the time summer rolled into fall, training was in full swing at Tyler's place. 'Training', of course, just being an excuse for 6-8 friends to get together and play Beirut on a weekly basis.

The big hitch in World Series preparation occurred only 7 weeks before the big tournament, when Peter and Kerrie (Wet Bandits) got hitched. This did not hold many back, as the two bing bong tables at the wedding reception proved to entertain those less interested in the dance floor. Various bars in the area started holding satellite tournaments, to which the winner would receive free entry to the World Series, which was now advertising a $20,000 grand prize. At a tournament in Fullerton, Tyler and Fred (Lodge West) rolled through the losers bracket on night 1, then took the title on the 2nd night, much to the dismay of the crowd of college kids, who heckled Lodge West for being old enough to have real jobs. Peter and Kerrie would play in a similar tournament in San Diego, finishing 2nd on the first day, then losing early to a team that caught fire
on the 2nd day. Team Kobe, from Orange County, played well in both tournaments, but unfortunately finished second to Lodge West in Fullerton and second to Chauffeuring the Fat Kid (Pittsburg transplants) in the SD tournament. Even though Team Kobe and Wet Bandits missed their opportunities for free World Series entry, they had tasted tournament play, done well, and would be ready come January in Mesquite, NV.
