December 1st Hollywood Satellite - Recap
The 64 teams that gathered for the December 1st El Guapo Satellite Tournament made it the largest SCBP tournament to date. Unfortunately, the side bar was all that El Guapo could provide on an already busy day (a less than ideal sized space for that many people & beer pong tables). Being at a new location with a packed house, preparing for so many teams caused setup and registration to delay the start time, and completing the tournament by closing time was definitely a concern. Once games started, the bracket started to fill up slowly but surely. After three rounds in the winner's bracket, the field of 64 teams had 'quickly' narrowed to 8. The teams taking the quick route to the finals (through the winners bracket) were two SCBP champs, Team Kobe and Silence, White Men Can't Pong, a SCBP newbie but World Series registrant, Pure Filth, the November 21st runner-up, Cobras, with two 5th place finishes in two tournaments, Trojans, who rebounded from a disappointing 11/21 tournament, and also the Ping Ballers and Don't Beer The Reaper. Silence didn't even let Pure Filth have a chance, making 10 out of 13 shots, the Trojans took down the Ping Ballers, White Men beat Reaper, and the Cobras took down juggernauts Team Kobe.
In the loser's bracket, several teams made the most of a second opportunity after losing their first game quickly. FSN lost their first game, then rattled off four straight wins. The Bricklayers also lost their first game. They won four straight games, beat FSN, then took down Pure Filth for their sixth straight win, before falling to Clutch and Throttle. Priceless Peptalks and Same-siez both won three straight after losing their first game. The Cervix Displacers, always a strong team, won four straight after getting sent down early. Sancho and the Wife won three straight. Coup de Grace and Isla Vista each lost their second round games, then each won three straight. After that match, Isla Vista had four straight wins, but met their ending in the next round against Team Kobe. The road back to the top tier is difficult after an early loss. After losing in the first round of the winner's bracket, it would take 12 straight wins to take home the top prize.
In the winner's bracket semi-finals, White Men Can't Pong beat the Cobras, and Silence took out the Trojans. In the final round of the winner's bracket, where against White Men Can't Pong, Silence stalled on the last couple of cups. White Men Can't Pong also had trouble finding their range, and Silence took the victory.
Clutch and Throttle, one of El Guapo's home teams, got sent down to the loser's bracket by the Cobras in the third round. They stormed the loser's bracket, beating a few of the teams already mentioned in Same-siez, The Law, Ping Ballers, and the Bricklayers to reach the final six teams. After six wins they finally received a rematch with the Cobras, and would send them to their third straight fifth place finish in SCBP tournaments. The same fate was waiting for the Trojans, as after playing Silence, they had the pleasure of meeting up with Team Kobe. Kobe lost to the Cobras in the 4th round, then found a groove, beating Isla Vista, Don't Beer The Reaper, and the Trojans. They took that streak against Clutch and Throttle, and started the game hitting 6 cups in 2 turns, and not really looking back. White Men Can't Pong was overmatched as well, as the two brothers took a 3rd place finish and cash prize as consolation as they prepare for the World Series.
With 64 teams, any team can get hot and win a few games. On the same note, any team can get cold and lose a few games. It takes 7 straight wins through the winners bracket to win a 64 team double elimination tournament. It takes more if trying to win from the losers bracket. After almost 7 hours of playing, in a testament to the skill these teams possess, the final two teams playing for the World Series entry fees happened to be the two teams entered that had recently won SCBP tournaments, Silence and Team Kobe.

Jon and RJ of Silence
Silence, though looking vulnerable earlier in the evening, did not even let Kobe force a second game, winning once again. Before pairing up before the October 14th tournament, RJ stated that he and Jon do not lose drinking games... ever. Their record playing together in SCBP tournaments (14-1) speaks for itself. Good luck to them, and all other teams, at the World Series in January.
