5/9 San Diego SCBP OPEN Satellite Tournament Recap
The morning after Peterpalooza 2009 was a bit rough. Tyler triumphed in the singles tourney, which ended around three fifty late in the morning. Everyone was beat, so we appreciate the understanding that we are usually more prepared for a Saturday morning tournament. We definitely didn't have the time or energy to coordinate a gray shirt coalition. That was pure coincidence. I would bet that matching (and un-matching at the same time?) shoes were not. Shep's hand-painted creations were also worth documenting; notice the ball splash, and the Kick Rocks tribute.
A good third of the field had attended Peterpalooza, so a number of players were fighting effects of THE MACHINE (and no, this is not a Sasha Vujacic reference). The 2 sets of bids to the SCBP Open were up for grabs, with a number of great team names fighting to join the SCBP Circle of Champions. Kick Rocks paired up two new teams, with Shep and Sam, and Travis playing as Shut Your Mouth Before I F*ck It. He was very insistent that the entire phrase not be abbreviated. The Hitchcock brothers graced us with their presence as well, making things confusing, despite not being twins. Grady fell on his ass last time he played at Canes. He paired up with Fat Kid to play as I Fell On My Ass The Last Time I Was Here.
A surprise from the winner's bracket was the Red Rangers - a hybrid team featuring half of Red Trolley, and half of the Lone Rangers. They beat half of Don't Pee In The Fish Tank, another Hitchcock brother on Cock Asian, then Fell On My Ass. They would lose their first game to Ryan and Chaz of And So It Was Written. On the other side of the bracket, Our Bodies Touch And The Angels Cry would lose to a couple of Texas transplants - Remember the Alamo.
In the loser's bracket, Just Say Hitch would win 4 straight games, finishing in 7th place. We also saw our first Kick Rocks vs. Kick Rocks grudge match ever, with Shut Your Mouth prevailing over Shep and Sam for their 4th straight win. The Red Rangers bounced back, and won two more thrillers, with Alicia hitting two clutch redemption shots in different games. They would fall to Written in the loser's bracket final for a surprising but well-deserved 3rd place finish, and entry to pongleague's west coast classic.
Remember The Alamo, always introduced as Chauffeuring the Fat Kid's roommates, played like World Champion protoge's should, taking down the final without much theatrics. Andy, just in town visiting, walks away with the obligation to come back to visit in September, as he and Brad will be playing in the SCBP Open. As a not-so-bad consolation, Ryan and Chaz also received a less valuable entry to the Open.
