November 2nd WSOBP Satellite Tournament Recap

SCBP had it's biggest tournament to date on Sunday, November 2nd at Canes in Mission Beach. Ninety-one teams registered to compete for a prize pool worth $2,000. With the coveted World Series Bid on the line, a lot of new faces were in the crowd, mingled with the usual SCBP heavy hitters.

After three rounds in the winner's bracket, many of SCBP's top teams were still alive. The only real fresh faces to make it to the round of 16 were Kelly & Dave (a daughter/father combo), Buck Foston (a duo with a ticking clock due to one player's imminent departure back to the east coast), and Spain. Boston & Scott count as half new as they've been around town before. The other 12 teams had all previously proven themselves on the tournament circuit.

Team Kobe, Mywicky, Team Beirut, Spain, Chauffeuring the Fat Kid, Pure Filth, Boston & Scott, and White Rice survived to the next round. The 8 teams have a combined 4 previous satellite wins, with a couple more sprinkled in with individual players from those teams. Serious matchups took place, with Chauffeuring the Fat Kid playing Pure Filth (who had owned the defending World Series champs in their last three match ups). CTFK prevailed in OT, Mywicky beat Team Kobe, Beirut handled Spain, and Boston carried Scott over White Rice.

Chauffeuring the Fat Kid took down Boston & Scott, then beat Mywicky to make their way to the finals, and looked to all but secure their first SCBP title after placing 2nd or 3rd in 103 straight tournaments.

Meanwhile, a truck load of games were taking place in the losers bracket (91 to be exact). It's not easy winning 14 straight games, but you get to wait less if you have to play more, and a couple teams thought it might be better to just lose one quickly, then get to play the rest of the afternoon. Training Day and Money Shot both lost their first game. Training Day rattled off 5 straight before bowing out. We Shit On Donkeys lost quickly, then won 4 straight before losing to Gotham Knights who won their fourth straight with that victory. Should've Worn A Condom also lost quickly, won four straight, then lost a spectator-friendly but heart-breaking/stomach-punch loss to one of a few teams (Kobe) that expected to, and did, turn a 6 - 1 cup deficit into a victory in 2 turns, thrilling the crowd, pounding their chests, and getting hats thrown onto and stuck on speaker shelves 15 feet off the ground in the process. As mentioned, Money Shot lost their first game, then won 4 straight games, then won another 4 straight games, then played and knocked out Kobe (9 straight wins), before succombing to 4th place finishers Boston & Scott.

This is about when Team Beirut took control with torrid shooting and a slew of devastating 3-cup turns. Let it be known that no team has shown more dedication, or put in more gas money to get to SCBP events than Team Beirut. [The Kick Rocks crew and Shred the Gnar come in a tie for 2nd]. After losing to Mywicky in the winner's bracket semi-finals, Beirut beat Pure Filth (6 cups), Boston & Scott (OT), and Mywicky to face another deserving SCBP team, Chauffeuring the Fat Kid in the finals. Beirut would overwhelm CTFK in the first game. Up 7-2, they hit the last two in a row, forcing an impossible redemption situation and sending the tournament to one final game. Chauffeuring the Fat Kid took a seemingly comfortable lead in the final, 3 cups left to 7, with a 3-cup turn. Beirut responded with three makes in each of their next two turns, leaving only the last cup left in an instant. Dan hit that in their first shot, completing 7 straight made shots in the final, and when CTFK could not redeem - the satellite championship was theirs.
