Silence is Golden in San Diego
Sunday was a huge day, with 54 teams taking over Canes' downstairs area. When the dust settled, we had another new team win an SCBP Tournament, and the free trip to Vegas for the World Series of Beer Pong. Silence's RJ said that when he and Jon get the chance to play together, they don't lose. We were a tad skeptical, but they had no fluke tournament as they took down Haasman the Great, G'd Up, Team Beat Down, and Chauffeuring the Fat Kid (2 of 3) among others. Congrats to them and good luck taking home those 50 Gs. Chauffeur and the Fat Kid played well enough to fight their way back to the finals, even taking one from Silence before stalling out on the last cup in the final game. Tough luck for the Sergio Garcia of SCBP. Dharma Initiative also played a good tournament, taking down Team Kobe in the winner's bracket semifinal, only to settle for a third place finish - losing to Silence, then Chauffeuring the Fat Kid.

Silence again showed the importance of winning early and staying in the winner's bracket. Teams coming out of the winner's bracket are now 5-0 in taking down SCBP grand prizes. Other teams tried their best to overcome the odds. Haasman the Great was the comeback story of the day. Their first lost came quickly - in the second round to the eventual champs. A loss that early in the tournament can be hard to overcome, a team essentially has to win twice as many games in the loser's bracket as they would on the winner's side. Haasman gave it their all as they threw together a string of 7 straight wins. They finally met their match in the semifinals against the runners up in a game that featured Fat Kid in rare trash talking form. [An aside to that - we appreciate the transformation that some players can make once hitting a table. Turning into an obnoxious a-hole can help get into someone's head - it's just unfortunate when the opposition takes it personal. A lot of the people that are a-holes on the table are the nicest people once the game is over. Then again, some aren't. That's where the newly formed Douchebag Patrol becomes handy.]
Haasman wasn't the only team that made an impressive run through the loser's bracket. Shake 'N Bake lost in the first round, then needing to win 12 straight to come back and claim the top spot, fell short halfway with 'only' 6 straight wins. Still a very impressive performance. Fong Jovi fell early as well, only to come back and win 4 straight. After winning their first game, Shred the Gnar caught their kryptonite with another surprise - Wet Balls. After a poor 9/29 West LA showing, Wet Balls got serious about their practice and the results speak for themselves, beating Shred the Gnar (March 10th champs) not once, but twice.
Overall it was a good tournament, despite a few scuffles, and a hiccup here or there. If you have any questions/comments/concerns/suggestions, feel free to send us an email, or use our contact form. Check out the final team rankings and the final bracket on our Results page. We'll also be posting some pictures, and hopefully we have video of some of the good games that took place. Otherwise sign up for our West LA Satellite tournament scheduled for October 27th, and keep practicing for the World Series!
