SCBP Open Highlights - Page 4

WOSBP V Satellite Tournament
On Saturday night, after the first 7 pool play rounds were complete and 12 kegs had been powered through, we held a double elimination tournament for bids to WSOBP V. Most people were burned out, or jet-lagged. Your SCBP Open hosts were exhausted, and it turned into the worst tournament Tyler and I have ever put together. We have no problems admitting this, but also don't really care (the Open was going smoothly, and that was our main priority). We apologize for not even getting a picture of the victors, but wanted to give San Jose's Rex Kwon Do kudos for their win.

32 Team Final Tournament
When 10 rounds were complete, three teams were interlocked in the 32nd spot with a 6-4/+1 record. In a playoff that thankfully did not end with all teams 1-1, El Guapo beat Kick Rocks LFG first, then Brangelina second, to take the last spot in the final tournament.

The teams were seeded into two separate 16 team double elimination brackets. The winners would face off in a best 2/3 final match. For sports fans that enjoy following the NCAA basketball tournament every March, a seeded tournament offers the chance to look for upsets. Given the strong field mentioned on page 3, almost every team in the final 32 were able to beat any of the other teams. Given those open chances, it was interesting to see that of the 16 first round games, only 5 were true upsets, with 8 of the top 10 seeds advancing to round 2. In Bracket #1, SCBP's Not Once Not Nevah took down the #5 seed It Shaffs & Byrns, a Norcal powerhouse. In Bracket #2, #23 MTB's Finest took out #10 Seed All Night.

Round 2 did not see many upsets either. The biggest was easily #16 Wet Bandits taking out the top seed, Beer Pong Whore-Sluts, with an unmatched 3-cup closeout in a 3-3 game. Not Once Not Nevah also advanced. The #9 seed, Since Sliced Bread, had a mini upset on paper, beating the #8 seed. When that #8 seed is Smashing Time, the magnitude is a little more significant. The Wet Bandits rolled again in round 3, catching Since Sliced Bread in a letdown game.
Von Spectating
Lester & Shane, #7 seed after pool play, handed #2 seed Blondies their first loss on the weekend. A dejected Von played spectator as Josh missed the one available redemption shot. Josh did not stick around to watch Von retrieve the loose ball, return to his side, and sink his just-for-kicks shot.

On the loser's side, two teams in bracket #2 went on huge runs after losing their first games. Mexicali and Coke In This Guy's Room, barely in the field seeded 31st and 30th, both lost their first game in the tournament. Mexicali lost to Blondies, then went on a 4 game win streak, beating the 18, 22, and 10 seeds before a revenge win against Blondies. Coke In This Guy's Room lost to the eventual champs in round 1, then took the long road back. They won 6 straight to reach the final of their bracket, needing to win 2 against Doin HELLA Much, but losing the first. Maybe there was too much coke in their room. [editor's note: or not enough]

On the other side of the bracket, the Wet Bandits held the only hope for both Southern California pride. Having decided last minute to play to enjoy the weekend, they found themselves upsetting team after team. The took out #4 seed Hood Fresh Paint Job in the winner's bracket final, only 1 win away from the final table. Sonoma Joe would not let that happen, as he continued his torrid shooting for the day. Hood Fresh rallied for a win against Sliced Bread, then took 2 straight from the WBs in a painfully poor shooting display from both teams.

As mentioned in the initial recap, it was Norcal's weekend. They took three of the top 5 seeds after pool play (Hood Fresh Paint Job, Doin

HELLA Much, and It Shaffs and Byrns) then had both teams in the championship match (Hood Fresh & HELLA). Rex Kwon Do also won the Consolation Bracket (for a set of bpong tables) in addition to the WSOBP V Satellite. Doin Hella Much was a deserving champion, with their only blemish coming in the 2/3 championship round. Congrats to them and the whole Norcal group.

Small consolations that SCBP can take from the weekend...
1) In taking down No Salt On The Margarita twice, the Wet Bandits assured their title as the most feared coed team featuring tournament organizers playing with a female partner. Samantha & Mooney, with their 7-3 record, are no doubt legit.
2) If you google "norcalbeerpong", it asks you, "Did you mean socalbeerpong?"
3) The World Series is only a few months away.

Thanks go out to Jamie, DJ Mprov, Jean & Austin Tsai (jeantsai.com), Kathy Green, BPONG, and others who I took footage from including Pongtracker, Norcalbp, and AABP.
