SCBP Open Highlights - Page 3

The Open's Tough Field
With 74 teams, a solid 50 of them could've made the final day at the World Series. Hey There Sasquitch made the top 25 at last year's WS. Chad cracked the top 25 at the WS last year, then made a partner upgrade to form Big Trouble In Little Tokyo. Risky Mormon rolls through AZ competition. Rex Kwon Do won the WSOBP V satellite on Saturday night. Shred The Green's members have each won WSOBP V satellite tournaments. Auto Zone has won tournaments in

the midwest. Wideout came in 2nd at a major tournament this summer. Remember the Alamo won the first SCBP Open Satellite. The Cocksmen, er Chokesmen, have won multiple events this year, for cash, the Open, and the WS. Not one of these fine teams was able to muster the 6-4/+1 record that was needed to break into the final 32 team tournament.

There was no getting around playing elite teams; everyone's schedule was difficult. Every team played 10 of the 73 other teams, which makes comparing schedules tricky. Everyone's results are intertwined. By winning a game, a team makes their schedule look easier, as their opponents will drop due to their loss. On the same note, a team that loses a lot of games will look to have a difficult schedule, as all of their opponents will have extra wins. Some teams did have a little easier draw, but this is something that is only clear after the results came through. The Chokesmen went 5-5 with a +16 cup differential. They won five games by an average better than 4 cups, but lost five 1 cup games (including a 3 OT game against Smashing Time). Perhaps they had some hard games, but they had one of the easiest draws, padding their cup differential against the three teams that finished at the bottom of the standings (72, 73, & 74). Against the top 71 teams, they went 2-5. Yikes. Doin HELLA Much had a very similar draw, and actually somehow played the 4 worst finishers. They too padded their cup diff against those 4 teams, going 4-0/+14. But they also won their other 6 games to secure the #3 seed. At these tournaments, a tough draw is not a good excuse, especially if you think you should win the whole thing.

There were some tough OT games in pool play, with Kick Rocks Platinum taking down Gettin It Done, MTB's Finest beating It Won't Suck Itself, and Smashing Time beating The Cocksmen, all in 3 OT. Smashing Time brought out the best in Doin Hella Much as well. See some video below:
