2009 Spring League - Final Week Recap

Going into the final tournament, any of the top 7 teams looked to be able to take home the trophies. In an examination of the matchups between the top tier teamsduring the regular season, almost none of the 3 game series ended with one team asserting itself as dominant by winning all 3 games. It only happened 4 times between matchups of those seven teams in a total of 22 series:

Spring League Trophies

Wet Bandits swept The Cocksmen
Pure Filth swept War Kittens
The Cocksmen swept Cock Push-Ups Anyone?
Peter's Ass <=8 swept Hey There Sasquitch (twice)

Essentially - we can look at these results and simply say that all of the teams are good, and any one team could beat any other team. It's like the Magic's two wins vs the Lakers in the regular season. We can just throw those out before playing the games that really matter.

Before starting the final tournament, players were randomly paired up for a recreational single elimination tournament. The first round saw some major action as Veronica/Gary took on Connie/Peter. With a gentleman's agreement that the ladies take any applicable rollbacks, the game went to 3 overtimes, with Connie and Vero exchanging major blows - each hitting 2/3 cups in both the first and second overtimes. One table over, Chad/Lolo took Scott/Heater to two or three OTs as well. In the semi-final round, Alexis/Trenor outlasted Rogelio/Kristal in another exciting multi-overtime game. Interestingly enough, the top 4 teams were all co-ed.

Heather just showed up to hang out with Brandon, and ended up with some cash, as she and Scott took 1st place, beating a worn-out-from-the-previous-match Alexis and Trenor. Rogelio and Kristal also did not have much left in the tank, and Connie and Peter split the $6 3rd place prize.

With the final tournament seeded, it played as could be expected in the first couple of rounds, except for a few upsets. In round 1, Taco or Burrito took out Fish Sticks, then pushed Peter's Ass to the limit in round 2, hitting last cup with 2 left. Bryan and Scott knocked those out, and eventually prevailed. The Junkies knocked out favored Tribute when a failed defensive attempt resulted in 3 knocked over cups. Team Beirut took out #6 seeded War Kittens in round 2 for the only 'real' upset that round. Round 3 got interesting, as #5 Hey There Sasquitch overcame those aforementioned 6 regular season losses to Peter's Ass, then beat the #1 seeded Wet Bandits.

The team of the day though was the #7 seeded Cock Push-Ups Anyone?. They beat #2 Pure Filth, #3 The Cocksmen, then sent #5 Sasquitch down in the winner's bracket final.

Despite the interesting finish to the winner's side, the loser's bracket did not see too many upsets. Tribute taking down War Kittens was the most prominent. After their somewhat premature losses, Peter's Ass and Pure Filth somewhat recovered, with Pure Filth almost pulling off what would've been an incredible come-back. They fought their way back to the final game, but fell when Jamie "played better than he'd ever play again". Jamie, the 47th best player in the room with 23 teams present, reaffirmed that sentiment with this question the following morning, "Who's 1st place trophy did I steal last night?"
