2008 Spring League - Finals

The tournament championship was triple elimination, with seeding determined from the final regular season standings. With the one game format, upsets are a definite possibility, but seeds 1-8 won their respective round 1 games. Round 2 proceeded in similar fashion, with seeds 1, 2, and 3 (Super Vlads, Pure Filth, and Wet Bandits) advancing, and one mild upset as #5 Twins beat #4 Team Beirut. The regular season records held up in the third round as well, as our last two teams left standing in the winners bracket were The Super Vlads and Pure Filth.

In the winners bracket final, the Vlads hit their first 7 shots. Combined with Pure Filth missing in their first couple of turns, Bryan and Jess found themselves up 10-3. At this point, they either got cold, got comfortable, or just couldn't find the cups. What could be expected to be a minimum of 3 turns (since Bryan doesn't miss) to close out the game, the Vlads could not shut the door, and Pure Filth took advantage, improbably winning the game.

In the intermediate bracket, there were not any notable upsets in the first few rounds. In one of the best matches of the night, Team Beirut came back against Wet Bandits and hit redemption shots to force all three overtimes before falling to the elimination bracket. Twins! won three straight games against good teams - first beating G'd Up, then winning in OT after hitting 2 redemption shots against the Bandits, then getting revenge by taking down the mentally defeated Super Vlads.

Winner's Bracket Intermediate and Elimination Brackets

With one more loss sending teams home, the elimination bracket was where two teams made some noise. Flippy Biscuit took home the title of Most Improved as they won four straight games, beating Whitehorse, Eiffel Tower, and Team Beirut. G'd Up won one winners bracket game, then won two in the intermediate bracket before finding themselves in a big hole. They dug their way out, beating We Shit on Donkeys, Flippy Biscuit, Wet Bandits, and Super Vlads to fight their way into the top three. Twins! only had to win one of two games to make the finals, but they were cold, having sat around waiting for their opponent. On the other hand, Scott and Jeremy were hot, coming off of multiple strong games. They didn't slow down, winning two straight, and headed for the finals. Twins! were understandably disappointed, but took home the bronze.

G'd Up came into the league championship tournament looking to repeat their performance from the 2007 Summer League, when they took home the gold trophies. This season they'd need to beat Pure Filth in 3 straight games. They took game 1 from a cold Pure Filth team, who had waited over an hour for the finals (gladly though while they watched the losses pile up for everyone else). G'd Up looked poised to win game 2, and take the tournament to a decisive game 3, as they hit their last cup with two still on the table for Pure Filth, who through two games hadn't yet regained much confidence. Dustin stepped up and nailed the first shot, and Brent backed it up to force OT. They took control from that point, and put G'd Up in the same situation, hitting the last cup with two left on the table. To create added drama, Jeremy nailed one, but Scott's shot rimmed out, giving the title to Pure Filth.
