Summer League - Week 8 Championship

First of all, we have to congratulate our SCBP Summer League Champs - G'd Up. They played consistently all year (including some close calls in previous SCBP tournaments), and took advantage of the triple elimination bracket to take 3 out of 4 games in the final against Mad Crazy Skillz. We've said this multiple times, but we'll say it again - Thanks to all for participating.

League Champs - G'd Up

Before the madness of triple elimination started, everyone gathered early for a good
old fashioned pot luck. Props goes out to Hill for setting the wheels in motion, getting Jose to open the bar a couple hours earlier than normal, and making sure there was plenty of meat to go around, along with those delicious feta cheese and bacon grilled peppers. Thanks to everyone for bringing mass quantities of everything else. What a fantastic idea.

While everyone trickled in, we set up an 18 person single elimination singles tournament. A couple SCBP veterans, the two members of Don't Pee In The Fish Tank, stopped in for a little action. Single elimination offers no 2nd chances, and Adam "The Logo" fell hard in round one against Zac. Zac's quote-worthy response was, "I just beat Jerry West in a game of horse!" Bryan had to be a favorite to win, and he came through, beating Tyler in the finals. Danny took the 3rd place game against Marcus Camby (Jamie).

Sixteen teams were in attendance for the tournament championship, nicely filling out a bracket. An unadvertized bonus to the tournament was the presence of gold, silver, and bronze 'trophies' to go to the teams finishing in first, second, and third places.
For fans of the NCAA basketball tournament, watching a bracket for upsets can be fun. Unfortunately for those rooting for underdogs, round 1 of the winner's bracket went exactly as the seeding predicted, with all top 8 seeds advancing.
The Gold Balls
Round 2 was almost equally boring, with the top 3 seeds advancing, and the only 'upset' being #5 Mad Crazy Skillz winning over #4 Balding Assassins. The absence of stat taking makes the games even less exciting on paper, other than the easily deduced percentages that Team Kobe shot in round 1, 10/12 for 83%, and round 2, 10/11 for 91%. In a huge turnaround, the winner's bracket got a little more interesting in round #3, as regular season co-champs Wet Bandits and Kobe were both knocked off in the semis, by Skillz and G'd Up.

The "loser's" bracket (loser's being an oxymoron... there are no losers when playing beer pong) definitely got interesting as Tutti Fruti Summer Love won a couple of games, only to be faced with good friends Beer Pong Fo' Life, who was fresh off of a stunning victory over the Balding Assassins. Fo' Life would prevail to face Kobe, who along with the Bandits, were on the right side of the bracket sooner than expected. Team Beirut hit 4 cups straight (the freight train) at one point, sending the Bandits to the third tier, greatly hurting the co-champs' chances of coming back. In a stunning display, Fo' Life made 6 of 7 shots against Kobe, winning in OT, and proving even in a game that is 99% offense, that defense wins championships. Fo' Life was easily the story of the day, as they steamrolled through the top level of the loser's bracket, winning five straight games, taking down three of the top 6 seeds, the Assassins, Kobe, and Team Beirut.

Kobe vs. Fo' Life

Meanwhile, triple elimination kept teams around (always a beautiful thing). The Angry Dragons, on vacation for a few weeks, lost their first two games, then came back and won three straight. Whiskey Rebellion lost two then won two. T.W.L.B., donning their beauty pagent sashes, lost two, then surprised the Assassins with their third straight loss, sending our regular season 3rd place finishers home in the first group. Kobe Wives and Beer Pong Junkies, both fantastic teams, just never got it going, winning one game each. The same goes for Priceless Hill, who alternated their three losses with two wins. Off in the Woods also alternated wins with losses. First Kobe Beat Off In The Woods, then Beirut Beat Off In The Woods, and finally the Dragons Beat Off In The Woods. The Gods had the roughest day of all, as every single round was played against their "arch nemesis" (which team wasn't on that list?).

The end of the night took quite a long time to materialize, as is expected with so many teams falling down from one bracket to the next. The Bandits were able to overcome their first two losses, winning 4 straight to take home the bronze. They used two lucky ricochets against Kobe in a 5 cup run, then got even with Beirut (who let it be known that out of respect for the lack of water in the Arab world, they recently started practicing with sand in the cups). Fo' Life had their run end with a #4 ranking, as they simply got cold, ending a fantastic tournament.

G'd Up lost to MC Skillz in the winner's bracket final. They then played two warm-up games to face Skillz for the golden balls. The two hours between games did not treat Tyler and Meghan kindly, as their Skillz and their buzzes had long worn off. G'd Up, needing to win 3 out of 4 games, took the first game. Skillz came back to win game 2. The third game turned into an epic battle, with G'd Up forcing triple OT and hitting their first three shots to seal the deal. With that huge win, the momentum was all on the G'd Up side of the table. Skillz was unable to rebound from the heartbreaking loss, leaving the door open for G'd Up to take home the gold with one last win. It was a marathon of a day, with G'd Up outlasting all competitors. Congratulations to the first SCBP League Champs.

Pictures of the brackets can be found here: winners | losers, with a few pictures from the day posted in the league gallery (we apologize for not getting good pictures of all the teams... if you have good ones... send them our way and we'll put them in the gallery).
