LA Summer League - Week 6

Updated 08/14/2007

Week 6 of the SCBP LA Summer League rolled along as usual. Teams fought either to make up games from missing a week, or to play the teams left on the 'need to play' list. There is still plenty of room for movement as teams either fight for one of the in-the-money regular season spots, or for seeding position for the championship tournament.

Tutti Fruti Summer Love had their best week so far, going 6 and 6 and scoring 7.5 total points, including 2 marathon wins vs. Whiskey Rebellion in overtime. The Wet Bandits played to a 7-2 record and took control of first place (if only temporary). The Balding Assasins, G'd Up, and Mad Crazy Skillz all moved up the rankings as well, pushing an absent Team Kobe into the #5 spot. Team Beirut had another good week, as they went 9-3 and moved into the #6 spot, which happens to be the last in-the-money spot in the regular season standings. They will have competition in week 7, as there is a tight group right beneath them.

TWLB gets the week 6 award for hardest schedule, as they took on three top 10 teams. It's been noted in this space previously that if a team gets three doublebacks in one game, they are likely to come out victorious. In Week 6, there were 16 three doubleback games, with 14 winners. In playing their tough schedule, TWLB joined the dubious group who happen to have a fantastic game, get 3 doublebacks, and still come up short in the win column (vs. BP Gods). Beer Pong Fo' Life had a similar game turn sour when Mad Crazy Skillz won in overtime. Priceless Hill played better than their record would suggest, but partner switches and malfunction zippers didn't seem to work as well this week.

Rivalry watch: After G'd Up played the Wet Bandits in week 5, they rekindled their familiarity in week 6 in the attempt to steal points from one another. In the week 5 series, G'd Up won only one game, but did so by 8 cups, stealing the cup differential point. In the series played in week 6, the Bandits won only one game, but did so by 8 cups, stealing that differential. G'd Up also took a double OT thriller from the Balding Assassins, the only double OT game of the week. Hopefully there will be more interesting developments after week 7, leading into the championship tournament in week 8.

As for individual accomplishments, five players distinguished themselves in their week 6 performance. For all their games in week 6, Jamie (Beer Pong Gods), Luz (Beer Pong Fo' Life), Kendal (Beer Pong Junkies), and Tarek (Team Beirut) all shot between 5% and 7% better than their usual week. Kerbear (Wet Bandits) shot a ridiculous 13% better than her standard week.

Week 6 saw numerous noteworthy games (>60% shooting for one game). Congrats to first timers Alex, Veronica, and Amy. Repeat offenders for week 6 included Scott, Ryan, Jerbear, Adam, Dan, Zac, Tyler, Kerrie, and Peter. Well played by all; we like to see that this list keeps getting longer.

One last noteworthy event took place in the match between Balding Assassins and Mad Crazy Skillz. Meg took a shot that went in a cup, circled back out, and landed right on top of the triangle - in the space between three adjacent cups. While SCBP rules specifically deny this phenomenon any credit (the point is to get the balls IN the cups), it is normal in house rules for a trifecta to be worth all three cups that the ball touches. It goes unnoticed by the stat sheet, but we applaud the feat nonetheless.
