LA Summer League - Week 4
Updated 07/30/2007
The front page news for SCBP's Week 4 results has to include Team Kobe's fall from perfection, the shake-up in overall points standings with the 2 match-ups of top 5 teams, and some statistical oddities that occurred this past Sunday night.
Team Kobe played their roommates the Angry Dragons in series #2. The stars finally aligned, Kobe did not play well, and the Dragons took game #2 by 5 cups, giving #24 their first defeat of the season. To throw a twist at the situation, the 5 cup differential held up through 2 close Kobe wins, and the Dragons took the cup differential point. With the league set up, the usual result is that the team that wins 2 out of 3 games will earn the extra point. In 25 series that took place Sunday, only 3 times did a team win only 1 game of a given series, yet win that game by enough to take the cup differential for the series. The Dragons performed that feat twice in the four series they played.
Another oddity: It seems like it should happen more often, but in 67 series played in weeks one through three, we had not seen a single series end with an even cup differential. Week 4 witnessed three series in which this happened. And with this not occurring at all before week 4, Beer Pong Junkies managed to pull it off twice.
Oddity #3: This is just bad luck of the draw. In week 3, there were 11 instances in which a team got 3 double backs in one game. Those teams were 10-1. In week 4, there were 17 instances in which a team got 3 double backs in one game. Those teams were 16-1. The bad luck? Tutti Fruti Summer Love posted both of those losses, as #4 G'd Up and #2 Wet Bandits ruined their well played games.
The series between SCBP co-founders and their significant others proved the usual effectiveness of hitting the 3 double back plateau. When Mad Crazy Skillz took on the Bandits, a little more than 2nd place was on the line (pride amongst others). Skillz came out firing, and drowned the Bandits with 3 doubles in the first two games apiece, spreading a cup margin of 7 over those two games. Intent on earning that cup differential point, the Bandits got three doubles in game 3, and though they fell short of the 7 cup differential, they parlayed their 3 doubles to the win.
With their 2 losses to M.C. Skillz, the Wet Bandits were looking for personal redemption in their match against SCBP powerhouse Team Kobe. This turned out to be an epic battle. Game 1 went as could be predicted. Bryan and Felipe shot 67% as a team, and took the game by 2 cups. Peter and Kerrie came strong in Game 2, and hit the last cup with 2 still on the table. Kobe never backs down, and came back to force OT. With the Bandits starting with both balls, they hit a double to start OT. Kobe did not catch up, and the Bandits took Game 2 by one cup. For Game 3, Peter and Kerrie stepped it up a notch a bit once more, hitting 8 cups by the end of their first full turn, and closing out the final two cups in the next two turns, making 10 out of 13 shots for the game. All Bryan could do was tip his hat to a great series, played well by both teams. Stats to chew on from this series... in Game 2 as a team, Kobe outshot the WB's 67% to 59%, and lost. They shot 63% for the series, and lost two games. What an insane series, that we hope can only be recreated sometime in the future.
The Balding Assassins quietly took a split of the bar tab prize with an 8-1 record. Adam carried Off in the Woods until Katie caught her groove, and they nearly doubled their overall point total. Beer Pong Fo' Life and Beer Pong Junkies both added precious points to stay within striking distance of the top. T.W.L.B. played better than their 0-9 record would show... forcing double OT against the 2nd place Mad Crazy Skillz.

Of personal accomplishments, hats go off to Tyler's perfect 6-0 game, accented by Meghan's 4-2 game, resulting in M.C. Skillz's knocking off 10 cups in 12 shots. Other notable performances include Evan (Dragons) making 8 of 9 shots in a game and Jeremy (G'd Up) making 7 of 8. Speaking of Jeremy, he made a pretty big move up the chart this week, and has Bryan's top mark in sights. As no players are shooting 60% overall, it is a good benchmark for a notable game. Players who eclipsed the 60% mark for one or more games in week 4 were: Jeremy, Adam, Peter, Tyler, Meghan, Bryan, Danny, Greg, Scott, Felipe, Kerrie, Evan, and Tarek.
